Like all fire departments, the Stony Brook Fire Department has practice fire drills. It's a time to practice what we learn in the classroom. Classroom study and practice drills go hand-in-hand to learn and sharpen our fire fighting skills.
On this page are several photos on a recent drill our department conducted at the Stony Brook University, which lies within our fire district. The drill simulated a fire in one of the building's rooms.
You'll notice that some of the photos appear hazy - this is because a non-hazardous smoke machine is used to simulate visibility restrictions that always exist with a fire in a building.
All firefighters are familiar with drills. It's as normal as getting up in the morning, and while we're all tired after it's completed, there's always a feeling of accomplishment and knowledge that the efforts are done to increase our committment to the community.
