When firefighter or EMS personnel respond to an alarm in an automobile, New York State law permits them to operate a "blue light". This light is the firefighter's way to indicate to other drivers on the road that they are responding to an emergency situation.
It does not permit the responder to violate driving laws or operate their vehicle in an unsafe manner.
What it does mean is that someone is in need of help, and that safety permitting, allowing the responder easy access will reduce their response time in assisting a friend or neighbour in need of our assistance.
So, if at all possible, please permit a firefighter responding with the blue light illuminated, the right of way whenever possible, but please do not put yourself or anyone else in potential danger by your actions.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
