Escape Ladders

Fire escape ladders in a multi-story home can provide an extra measure of safety by providing another escape route in the event of a fire. Having this second method of leaving a burning home could make a huge difference to someone whose normal method of egress is blocked by deadly flames and smoke.

Placing an escape ladder in every upper floor room will provide all people in those rooms with a higher level of safety.

One of the most important features when looking at home fire escape ladders is the presence of standoffs. These look like little pipes that help steady the ladder itself and allow the person a better grip and a more secure toehold when escaping.

Before purchasing a ladder, make sure that it fits the specific window for where you want it used. If the ladder is for a child, then you should have the child become familiar with putting the ladder out the window and using it. Have your child practice climbing out from a ground floor window. A good idea is to make this part a complete family fire drill.

Of course, one could also put in a more elaborate and permanent escape ladder system, but the cost of such a device usually makes it prohibitive for many families. A relatively inexpensive system like a portable ladder system is one that provide a great benefit in safety.
